I was just sitting with my morning coffee with the tv on and there was suddenly a commercial “have you or someone you love suffered bone or nerve injury from a spinal fusion?”
Uh yeah, me. Totally weird to see a drug lawsuit commercial essentially speaking to you. People are suing over the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) used in some fusions because it sometimes overgrows and causes nerve injury. BMP was used in mine. I suffered nerve injury.
Anyway, deep breath. I am not suing anyone (again). But I wish there was something i could do about awareness. If you know anyone undergoing a spinal fusion, tell them to ask their doctor a lot of questions about whether or not they plan to use BMP. It is not always used. I assume there are risks and benefits either way. But it’s good to have the info.
