“A two-month program combining gentle yoga with meditation techniques, known as Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, seemed to ease tenderness, pain and stiffness among patients with rheumatoid arthritis in a new study. I think these findings are pretty consistent with other studies of mindfulness and chronic conditions,” said Mary Jo Kreitzer, who was not involved in the research… Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a program developed decades ago at the University of Massachusetts to help seriously ill patients cope with pain, such as from advanced cancer or AIDS. But in recent years that program has been adapted and offered more widely to people seeking relief from pain and stress of many kinds. Mindfulness training involves the cultivation of nonjudgemental attention to unwanted thoughts, feelings and bodily experiences via meditation and may help ameliorate both psychological and physical symptoms of chronic disease,” write the study authors in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.”

Your unconscious rage might be causing your pain

This is the premise of Dr. Sarno. He believes there is a response that happens in our bodies to both conscious and unconscious emotion. It is a response that affects nerves and muscles and causes very real pain.

First, be sure if you are having pain that you get it checked out. I am not a doctor and certainly anything that hurts should be looked into. But maybe then read Dr. Sarno. Even if you are told you have stenosis or a bum disc. Maybe especially if you are told that. RSD, back pain, arthritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow… what if all you needed to feel better was to read a book? I have seen a difference in myself.

Fresh ginger tea for pain

Lately I have been drinking a lot of fresh ginger tea mainly to help build my immunity. One thing happened when I got into eating to help fight pain and that is that I feel the need to constantly build my gut health and my immunity. I grew up with the mindset that you deal with things after you get sick. Now I try to build myself up so i don’t get sick but if i do, thankfully, it’s usually much shorter and less hectic. I always proudly tell the story of the stomach flu that took down the entire office except the girl with the apple cider vinegar. It’s not really a good story. I think I just gave away the ending.

Could these foods be making your pain worse?

Here’s a great list of foods that may be increasing your inflammation. Do you have arthritis? RSD? Just want to be healthy? There is a lot of information out there to suggest that these foods are making your life a little bit harder.

I can say for myself that i have noticed a big inflammatory increase when i have allowed myself to go carb crazy.  I am very picky about my carbs for that reason. If i am going to splurge, i generally make it count (read: visit to Joan’s on Third). And i shy away from cheese more than I’d like to. But I truly believe limiting these foods has meant less pain for me.
